Concert Programs

For the past 10 years, Marcus Roberts has offered concert programs each year that are linked to particular themes. We encourage you to select the program that you think your audience will most enjoy or one that fits best with your overall season. One of the trio's very popular programs from past years ("New Orleans Meets Harlem") has now become a recording by the Marcus Roberts Trio. Expect more of that in the near future.

The concert programs for the coming season include the following:
What a Wonderful World (Blues and Gospel Roots of Jazz)
Rhythm and Romance
In the Footsteps of Giants
Repertoire for Performances with Symphony Orchestra

In 1996, Marcus Roberts' recording of Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue was released on Sony Classical ("Portraits in Blue"). Since that time, he has performed with symphony orchestras, large and small, all over the world. In recent years, the trio has done a number of performances with college and university orchestras as well.

The orchestra repertoire currently being offered is as follows:
Rhapsody in Blue (Gershwin)
Concerto in F for Piano and Orchestra (Gershwin)
The 'I Got Rhythm' Variations (Gershwin)
Yamekraw (James P. Johnson)
Roberts has created arrangements for most of these works to be performed either as a solo pianist with orchestra or for jazz trio and orchestra. The blending of the original scores with jazz improvisation makes these arrangements fresh and exciting.

In the words of the great maestro, Seiji Ozawa (Musical Director, Vienna State Opera), "Marcus Roberts, Roland Guerin, Jason Marsalis- to work with these three geniuses gives me so many surprises, so much pleasure and the deep satisfaction of making music."

Educational Programs

Marcus Roberts is committed to jazz education. Over the past ten years, he has developed a variety of educational programs that are available in conjunction with concert offerings. Roberts is on the faculty at the School of Music at Florida State University where he has been able to expand his involvement in the training of younger musicians.

Building audiences for jazz is a key mission of our organization. As such, we have developed programs for children of all ages as well as for adults. The trio offers programs for musicians and aspiring musicians. They perform often for children, many of whom have never heard jazz music before. The list below outlines some of the different types of educational offerings that are available.
