Marcus Roberts is the consummate solo piano artist. With his classical training and jazz genius, he has been called him the “master of solo piano improvisation”. In the L.A. Times some time ago, Don Heckman wrote of a recent Roberts’ performance, “Filled with musical riches–as extraordinary for its purely spontaneous nature as it was for its colorful textures and thoughtful juxtapositions of structure and rhythm–it was one of the year’s best displays of jazz skills.”
One of Roberts’s most popular CDs of all time was entitled “Alone with Three Giants”. In it, he explored the remarkable legacies of Thelonious Monk, Duke Ellington, and Jelly Roll Morton. Now, more than 25 years later, when Roberts is hailed for his own sound that is filled with richness and creative genius, he continues to provide a modern voice for these master’s of jazz.
This year, Roberts will share a new take on some of our celebrated jazz masters in an all-new program called “Alone with Three Giants”. Will this be his next solo piano release on J-Master Records? …… Only time will tell.
